Do I need to read music?

No. The cards use fret numbers, string positions and colors. If you can count to 12, you can read them.

What do I write on it with?

Any standard dry-erase marker. It wipes clean with a cloth or your thumb.

Does it work for acoustic and electric?

Yes. Any six-string guitar in standard tuning has the same notes in the same places.
